Winter warmer hot chocolate

We loved bonfire night. There’s something about fireworks that turns us into giddy schoolchildren, going oooh and ahhh at every available opportunity. The only thing better than spelling your name with a sparkler is the food and drink on offer: toffee apples, toasted marshmallows and mulled wine – it was the first time this year that we’d really had a taste of our old winter favourites.  We were also reminded how much we love a good, old-fashioned hot chocolate. These days, we have a tendency to go for the fancy double shot, skinny, frappe, mochachino creations, but a good cup of cocoa has them all beat. We put together this gorgeously thick and rich hot chocolate recipe, complete with marshmallows, that will quite literally melt in your mouth.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 tablespoons malted milk powder
  • 2 tablespoons cornflour
  • 3 tablespoons icing sugar
  • 4 tablespoons of good quality cocoa powder
  • 100g dark chocolate
  • A bar of milk chocolate
  • Marshmallows – we chose cinnamon flavoured ones from Zukr Boutique

This is such a simple recipe. Mix all your powders into an airtight jar like this one and then grate in the dark chocolate. This mixture will keep for as long as all the individual products are in date, so make sure you check the details on the individual packaging.

Now to the good bit. Use your mugs to measure how much milk you’ll need (this is the best way to make sure you don’t waste any). Pour into a pan and simmer on a low heat. Whisk in 5 tablespoons of powder mixture for each person. Add a couple of squares of milk chocolate, and then a few more. The milk chocolate helps balance out the bitter taste of the dark chocolate. Bring to the boil and simmer for a few minutes until thick.

While your hot chocolate is bubbling away, sort out your accessories. These cinnamon flavour marshmallows are really quite special, and taste incredible dipped in the hot chocolate. Zukr Boutique’s butterscotch or whisky orange flavours would work just as well. Seeing as we were feeling indulgent, we also sampled some of their dark chocolate marshmallow truffles and salted caramel lollipops. Needless to say we felt sufficiently sick afterwards.
