The first door on our Advent calendar

Something tells us Christmas morning won't look this calm...

Welcome to our 2013 Advent calendar! Every day throughout Advent, we’ll be introducing you to a member of our team, along with a beautiful product from the site and the small creative business behind it. We asked our sellers to share a product that epitomises, so read on and stay tuned for more!

Behind window number one is Verushka, one of our customer support assistants, with a Personalised Woodland Christmas Sack by Alice Palace. The sack has been personalised for Verushka’s nephew, Max.

What does mean to you? is a really creative marketplace for British products, and particularly for personalised items. Giving a personalised gift, especially for Christmas and other special occasions shows that you have put some real thought into it – not always easy! So means to me, a place where I can find original gifts to give to very special people.

About Alice Palace

Alice Palace has been part of for many years – almost as long as we’ve been running! As a small, family-run business, they’ve created a gorgeous range of homeware, stationery and wedding accessories.

Why does your Personalised Christmas Sack epitomise for you?

I fondly remember my own family’s tradition of filling pillowcases with presents to open on Christmas morning. As one of four sisters, there was always sibling rivalry over which pillowcase we each had. It gave me the idea to design the Alice Palace illustrated gift sacks – the unique designs are both lovely and practical, and they can be personalised for all family members, so there are no more quarrels!

What’s your absolute favourite Christmas treat?

A warm mince pie.

What’s your favourite Christmas tradition?

The family mince pie competition! Each member of the family has to make a batch of mince pies (there are very few rules and you can use any recipe you want) and then the ‘judge’ (usually our Mum Gill) numbers each one – everyone casts their votes on each mince pie based on how it’s been presented and then the taste. It always creates lots of laughter and disagreements! It’s become such a special part of our Christmas day we now even have a trophy for the triumphant baker, and it’s a MUST that a photo is taken of each year’s winner!

What’s your favourite Christmas song?

‘Fairytale of New York’ by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl

And what are you hoping Santa will bring this year?

Heating for our house! We moved into our new house in August and it needs complete modernisation, and so we currently have no heating…
