Say hello to Emma…

Meet Emma. She’s one of the original members of the team and has been around since the very early days of notonthehighstreet.com (as documented in Holly and Sophie’s new book, Build a Business From Your Kitchen Table). She’s currently scouring the site for accessories for her new home, most likely while listening to Rihanna.

Your job title is…

Public Relations Manager

Explain your job

I head up our external communications strategy to journalists, create PR campaigns and implement them with our in-house team. Day to day we work with the press to ensure our products, our business and our founders are featured in the relevant publications.

It’s my job to maintain good relationships with journalists. I work with our small business sellers to constantly provide exciting and fresh content to keep up the coverage.

Describe a typical working day

After I arrive at the office I spend some time online reading the news and ensuring I’m up to date with current affairs. As we work with over 3,000 small businesses it’s important we’re well-briefed on events, specifically business news.

But – and I know everyone always says this – there really is no such thing as a typical day. Sometimes I spend time researching specific publications that we want to target; other days I spend my time planning and making sure we – and our sellers – are ready for upcoming events. The Jubilee is a good recent example. Working in PR means you’re always thinking a long way in advance. For example, we run a six month Christmas campaign in order to meet different publications’ deadlines.

We also spend a lot of time communicating with journalists to ensure we’re up to date on what they’re working on and assisting them as much as possible.

Best thing about your job?

My favourite thing about my job is the relationships I build. I get to work closely with lots of inspiring small businesses every day – PR helps to build their businesses, so it’s very rewarding. As we have such a diverse range I also get to work with hundreds of different journalists too – my job never gets boring.

Oh, and I get to read lots of magazines!

Favourite seller on the site?

It’s got to be Rise Boutique. I’ve only discovered this seller recently and I love their range. They offer really affordable fashion; prices start at £15 and the quality’s fantastic. I wore one of their dresses to a wedding recently and received lots of compliments.

Current/upcoming trends you’re coveting?

Anything location-inspired. I love travelling and languages so anything that encompasses either one (or both) makes me very happy.

What can’t you live without?

Friends and family.

For lunch today you ate…

A tuna baguette and a KitKat Chunky.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

One Tree Hill.

Favourite product on the site?

I’ve just moved into my first flat so I’m obsessed with all things interior. I particularly love Helena Carrington’s nostalgic photos of Italy – I want to frame them all and hang them in my kitchen.

What’s on your iPod at the moment?

I have an unhealthy obsession with Rihanna songs. But I like to listen to different music depending on my mood.

What would you like to be doing in five years time?

When I retire I’ve always dreamed of opening my own restaurant somewhere along the southern coast of Italy. Hopefully retirement is a few years off though…
