Make, Do & marvel

Last week we held our first ever large-scale seller event, Make, Do & Meet 2012. We’ve met lots of our sellers individually and gathered them together in smaller groups in the past, but we’ve never been able to bring so many of them together in one place before now.

350 sellers joined 40 members of our team at The Garden Room in Syon Park, near our offices in Richmond. We’d prepared a timetable of workshops and an array of guest speakers throughout the day. We also set up individual areas where sellers could come and talk to us, ask questions, get to know each other and (perhaps most importantly) eat cupcakes.

Holly and Sophie kicked things off and outlined the plans for the rest of the day. The first of four speakers was Sarah, our Head of Brand. She shared valuable insight into our brand, how it has developed and what that means for our sellers. Next up was Medeia Cohan-Petrolino, former Head Curator for the University of the Arts London and current Creative Director of School for Startups, who discussed mixing business with creativity and included tips on how to grow and improve small businesses.

Lunch was served (coronation chicken, fresh salmon, potatoes, Mediterranean vegetables and the best Eton Mess we’ve ever tasted), giving everyone a chance to sit and natter with fellow sellers. Many of them have already met, either in person or online through our seller community, but this was a great opportunity for them to connect, share tips and experiences about selling on the site and running a small business.

Our photographer and stylist ran photography workshops throughout the day, giving tips and advice on how to create the best product shots for optimum sales. Sellers also mingled with our team and visited areas we had set up where they could speak directly to their account managers, the online marketing team, customer service, and our merchandising and product team.

The afternoon speakers were Stuart Smith, CEO of innovation company Wood Holmes, whose subject was the art of storytelling and how to inspire customers, and finally Emma Jones, Founder of Enterprise Nation and serial entrepreneur who focused on how to grow small businesses quickly.

It was a really special day for us. Getting together and meeting our sellers is a milestone we’ve dreamed of achieving since began in 2006 and it was incredible to finally get there. A big, big thank you to all our guest speakers, our fantastic team who made it all happen and most importantly to all the lovely sellers who attended – we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. For those who weren’t able to come – we can’t wait to see you next time!
