Christmas cheese twists

The festive season is well and truly upon us. We’ve got our trees up, mulled wine on the stove and fairy lights in every possible corner of the house. Whilst we love a good festive shindig, the pressure that comes with hosting can sometimes be a little overwhelming. Armed with a fork and a selection of the best festive cookbooks, we set out to find some quick and simple recipes to make your evening go without a culinary hitch. This cheese twists recipe from The Hairy Bikers is undoubtedly our favourite. They’re great to serve before a meal or as part of a buffet spread.

  • 375g ready rolled puff pastry
  • 3 slices parma ham
  • 100g gorgonzola
  • 1 free range egg
  • A sprinkle of celery salt or sesame seeds.

(Makes approx 20)

Preheat your oven to 200c (gas mark 6). On a lightly floured work surface roll out the puff pastry so it is about 5mm thick. Lay the strips of parma ham onto one half of the pastry, then crumble over the gorgonzola. Fold over the other half and roll out again so you have a thin sheet. Trim the edges of the filled pastry, brush over the beaten egg and sprinkle with celery salt or sesame seeds. Cut the pastry into 1cm strips, twist and transfer to a well greased baking tray. Press the ends of the pastry twists down to make sure they don’t unravel. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

Serve on a platter like this one from Dibor or in a large jam jar. Accessorise with felt pom poms and hessian bunting for an added festive feel.

A light dusting of smoky paprika or cayenne pepper adds colour and a tongue tingle.
