Behind the scenes at Cocoapod

Can you imagine anything better than being a chocolatier? Well, to celebrate Chocolate Week we’re giving you a sneak peek into what it’s like to run your very own chocolate factory. We went behind the scenes at Cocoapod to find out what working with chocolate everyday is like, and how much of the stuff they actually eat. There may not be a chocolate river – or Oompa Loompas running riot – but boy do we want to work here!

Tell us what you love most about working with chocolate
We can safely say there is nothing better than working with chocolate. It smells delicious, it looks delicious and of course, it tastes delicious. We’re lucky that our team are creative and love to make things – must-have qualities for any chocolatier. Over the last few years, the range of products we offer has really evolved. We’re now using more colours, patterns and flavours. We’re exceptionally proud to say all of our chocolate is still handmade and carefully crafted.

We give customers the option to add their own personal messages to their chocolate. It’s lovely to see the different requests customers dream up. Most of them are playful and fun, but we do get the odd rude message – those make us laugh!

The only downside to working with chocolate everyday? It’s just too hard to resist eating!

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?
Keeping in touch with the latest trends is important. We often look to fashion or interior design for inspiration. Browsing window displays is also great for new ideas. Colours, textures and shapes are all important to making desirable chocolate.

Developing new products is a big part of our job, as are key gifting occasions. We like to use events, like Easter or Eid, as inspiration. We enjoy the challenges of creating a new product; how we’re going to present it and package it – it’s all part of the fun.

So we know it may not be like Willy Wonka’s, but tell us about your chocolate factory
Much like the inside of Roald Dahl’s imagination, it’s busy, colourful and of course, sweet smelling. We’ve designed our factory to reflect the flow of work, from production to dispatch. We have dedicated spaces for making the chocolate, putting together the orders, packaging and then finally dispatching the order to our customers.

We do like to be extremely organised, possibly to excess – there are plenty of colour co-ordinated drawers and as many shelves as the wall will hold! As a team, we’re very noisy and sociable with lots of chat alongside the hard work. All in all, it’s a lovely place to work!
