Behind the Scenes at
Clara and Macy

It’s impossible to introduce ex puppet maker and seller, Laura Clempson, without first introducing the wonderfully grumpy Clara and her twin sister, Macy. Dreamt up during one of Laura’s lunch breaks, the loveable duo have become the figureheads of the eponymous brand. We went behind the scenes to find out more about where Clara & Macy came from, and what’s in store for their future.

How did Clara and Macy start?
I’ve always wanted to be a children’s author, and I originally started the brand as a way of piquing the interest of publishers. I hoped that if I could sell products that were based around my character Clara, they’d be able to see the merchandise potential of signing a picture book deal. It turns out that this plan has kept me so busy that I haven’t had time to finish my books off yet!

What do you love most about what you do?
I absolutely love being a designer-maker. To be able to imagine a product, create it and then have someone purchase the finished article is incredible. It’s really hard work, especially with two little children of my own but it’s totally worth it. I get to wake up each day and decide what I do. That’s amazing.

We want to know more about your personal style. Tell us about your home.
We live in a lovely two bedroom Victorian terraced house. It’s a bit of a squeeze to fit in two adults, two children, and a growing business but we still love it! There are original floorboards, high ceilings, and fireplaces in every room. Plus a whole bundle of toys, clutter and probably the odd cheerio still on the floor from a chaotic breakfast!

What’s the big dream?
I have huge plans for Clara and Macy. I want to inspire children to get creative and have confidence in their own artistic ability. I want to inspire mums and dads to get creative with their kids too, even if they don’t think that they can do it. I would also love to have a studio for the business and start employing some extra help around peak seasons. Oh, and to finally start making progress on the Clara books!

Which products on the site have particularly caught your eye this month?
So. Many. Things. I absolutely love this Moon and Star necklace by Little Nell.

I would just like to say, having known Laura since the moment she was born, that she has always been creative, extremely hard-working, determined and an all round lovely person (and a very special daughter). I am so very proud of her amazing business and all the beautiful products she sells. I also know it won’t be long before those Clara and Macy books are on bookshelves everywhere.
