Orla McDonald – our talkative, tap-dancing Account Manager.

Our busy staff are tough to pin down. But here we’re ushering them into the spotlight, one by one (sometimes kicking and screaming), to find out more about who they are, what their role is and the things they love about being part of notonthehighstreet.com.

What’s your name and your job title?
Orla and I’m an Account Manager for the Jewellery and Fashion team.

What did you dream of being when you were growing up and why?
I wanted to be everything! It changed on a daily basis, from ballerina, to journalist, to sports physio, to lawyer, to florist… I could go on.

Tell us some of the less ordinary things about you.
I have double jointed toes and (totally unrelated) I was once the back-end of a tap dancing pantomime cow. It was Jack and the Beanstalk – so a plot-critical cow.

What three words might your friends use to sum you up?
Competitive, cheerful and loud.

What made you want to work at notonthehighstreet.com?
I was a fan of the site as a customer for a long time, but it was when I learnt that notonthehighstreet.com had been set up by two female entrepreneurs and supports thousands of creative businesses that I wanted to find a job here.

Did you have any preconceptions or expectations about notonthehighstreet.com that working here has changed?
I guess I didn’t appreciate how much I would be inspired by the sellers on our site. Seeing them grow and reach new milestones, whilst doing something that they are passionate about, is amazing. I feel really proud of the part that we can play in their success.

What’s different about notonthehighstreet.com to any other place you’ve worked?
So. Much. Cake.

What things about you have been criticised in other workplaces, but praised here?
When I joined the company, I was part of the New Business team, finding the best new businesses to sell on the site, part of which meant I got to read magazines at my desk…not something that I could imagine getting away with in any of my previous jobs!

What do you most value – and most enjoy – about working here?
I feel lucky to work in a company that people are excited by. There is a real sense that we are still just at the start of our journey and I feel privileged to be part of that.

Describe one of your best days here.
There are lots of great days, my favourites tend to involve food or balloons. But last year, I “had” to go to Cornwall to check out local food fairs – that was a day when I really loved my job.
