Birthstone jewellery: what does your birthstone say about you?

Birthstones by month

As you may already know, we’re pretty big on personalised birthday gifts. There’s just something special about giving a gift that’s been chosen and made specifically for one special person. If you want to buy a personalised gift for someone, but you’re not sure what special moment or memory you want to celebrate, birthstones are a great alternative. Not only does a birthstone celebrate the month (and, some say, star sign) you were born in, but each stone also carries meaning of its own. We’ve looked at the history of gemstones and learnt the attributes of each month’s gem:

January – Garnet:  signifies everlasting friendship and trust

February – Amethyst: for a clear head and quick wit

March – Aquamarine: this pale-coloured gem is said to cool the temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and level-headed

April – Diamond or Cubic Zirconia: represents natural beauty and purity

May – Emerald:  believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune, and youth

June – Pearl: the only gem to come from a living sea creature, pearls are said to represent innocence

July – Ruby: stirs the imagination and is said to guarantee health, wisdom, wealth and success in love

August – Peridot: green-tone jewel to protect against nightmares, and bring power and influence

September – Sapphire: will protect your loved ones from envy and harm

October – Tourmaline or Opal: signifiers of change

November – Citrine: the golden gemstone is said to support vitality and health

December – Turquoise: protects the wearer from negative energy, bringing good fortune and peace into your home

  1. My Grandmother, born 1887, told me that “Pearls mean tears.” How does this fit in with your explanation that “pearls mean innocence,”
