A little bit 007…

We love James Bond movies here at notonthehighstreet.com HQ – from the good (Casino Royale, Goldeneye, the Connery era generally) to the rubbish (Moonraker’s double-taking pigeon), and with Daniel Craig and Skyfall currently doing the business at cinemas our attention has turned to all things 007.

Mention Bond films to anyone and they’ll often think of the same things: guns, girls and gadgets. The first two are a little out of our remit – for reasons of legality and basic good taste respectively – but we’ve discovered that whilst we can’t boast flying cars or interplanetary lasers, our very own Q division (ie our community of ingenious sellers) can hold its own in terms of clever things that aren’t quite what they seem. Here are some of our favourites…

Codes and hidden messages
Whether gaining entry to a secret vault or defusing something nasty with a handful of seconds to go, Bond is synonymous with secrecy. Indulge your inner super-spy with these products featuring numerical combinations, fingerprints and hidden information.

Disguises
Of course, in the films Bond doesn’t usually go in for personal disguises – he happily introduces himself to every henchman and super-villain he meets, safe in the knowledge that he’ll be able to beat them when the time comes – but disguising items in innocuous ways is another hallmark of the series.

The visual style of Bond is often in the details, from the impeccable tailoring to the signature cocktail. A little suave style will go a long way so explore these discreet suggestions – and we promise there are no exploding pens or invisible cars.

Unsurprisingly, all the Bond talk has kicked off the always-lively discussion over which is the best Bond film, and which is the best Bond theme song. So now it’s over to you. Are you a Bond classicist for the originals such as Thunderball, You Only Live Twice or Goldfinger, or do you prefer the later techno-realism (relatively speaking) of Goldeneye or The World Is Not Enough? And as for themes, does Shirley Bassey beat Shirley Manson? Does Tom Jones have the license to thrill or does Gladys Knight have the ultimate killer theme? Or does the most recent entrant, Adele, have them all licked? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

(Just to kick things off, personally, my favourite Bond film is The Living Daylights, and my top Bond theme is Diamonds Are Forever.)
