venue profile: Devon Beach Weddings

Join us on our final day of Venue Week for a profile with a difference. Devon Beach Weddings offers a unique wedding package in a picturesque beach beauty spot on one of the most beautiful parts of the British coastline. What makes the venue even more special is the network of hand-carved tunnels that surround it, leading to gorgeous sheltered beaches and a tidal pool steeped in fascinating history.

Devon Beach Weddings is a family-run business. Their venue is truly unique; stylish and unusual, and they know the importance of making your day as special as possible. Here’s what you need to know:

What does the venue hire fee include?

The fee covers use of the wedding facility and garden overlooking the beach throughout the day and evening of your wedding. Food, drink, a disco or band, wedding insurance and registrar fees are not included. Bar and catering staff will be provided.

What unique options do you offer?

Wedding insurance at just £20. We will also fix your venue hire fee to those current to the date of your booking. A seal playing in sea directly below is free but very much subject to availability!

Is there a best time of year for weather?

It’s a typically British answer but it’s not really possible to answer this. April this year was glorious, June has not been so great. However it can be amazing any day, any month. We’ve had lots of wedding days when it was awful in the morning but lovely by the afternoon.

Luckily we’re well prepared with a fall-back plan – a gorgeous indoor facility with the same breath-taking views, meaning you can just relax and go with the flow regardless of what the weather’s doing outside.

That said, we had 78 weddings in 2011 and between mid-May and October and only three were held indoors. Ultimately we will always endeavour to have your wedding outside and will only move it at the last moment if we absolutely have to – seamlessly and with style.

Do you offer winter weddings?

We can hold weddings throughout the year. Our stylish first floor function room provides spectacular views of the crashing waves, while the stunning cliff and garden lighting looks great during the darker evenings. We will still offer weddings outside if the weather permits.

Can we just have the ceremony with you but move on to somewhere else for the evening reception?

Unfortunately not – due to the limited availability of dates we can only accept bookings for ceremonies if accompanied by an evening reception and/or party.

Will the venue be exclusive to us?

Your booking hire fee includes exclusive use of the garden, beachside function building and bar starting from the morning of your wedding.

Can we marry on the beach itself?

Unfortunately not, but we will get you as near possible! Legally, all wedding ceremonies within the UK must be held within an approved structure. Your options with us include a thatched gazebo overlooking the sea, our gorgeous function room/bar overlooking the garden, gazebo and sea, or even within the incredibly romantic tunnels themselves!

What are the maximum numbers for guests?

We encourage relaxed, informal weddings and smaller parties. Ceremonies can be held for up to 80 people (Including the happy couple). However we can welcome up to 120 guests for an evening party with drinks.

What decorations will we need?

Due to the dramatic coastal location extensive decoration is not normally necessary. Many couples arrange for the gazebo to be dressed with flowers or other decorations. Table decorations are also worth considering. You will have access from 10am for decorating purposes. We have pre-installed decorative lighting for the gazebo, bar, function room, garden and dramatic cliff flood lighting.

Top tips?

Late afternoon marriage ceremonies are proving very popular and our 4pm ceremony time works very well for a lot of people. It means you get the early evening sun on the beaches for photos and great continuity for the event going into the evening reception/party.

Choose an accompanying drinks package and our canapé menu to keep your guests happy straight after the ceremony.

Create a relaxed and informal garden party atmosphere by mixing up seating and standing areas for your guests during the ceremony or afterwards. Allow guests to make full use of our balconies and terraces and enjoy the amazing views!

Our informal food platters are popular with guests as a late evening snack to accompany drinks and during breaks in the band’s sets.

The most successful weddings here don’t have table plans. It’s far better to allow your guests to mingle in a relaxed garden party atmosphere and make full use of the amazing venue and location you have chosen. Guests absolutely love being free to mingle and enjoy the day themselves – nobody likes being bossed around at a wedding!

Thank you for joining us for Venue Week. We’d also like to extend our very special thanks to Poundon House, Country House Wedding Venues and Devon Beach Weddings for making our blog the perfect balance of inspiring and informative!

Have a wonderful weekend,
