styling your day the fabric way

How you style your wedding day can be inspired by anything. From your favourite holiday destination to a memorable childhood fairy tale, even possibly the groom’s fanatic comic book collection! It is important to choose a theme that instinctively feels right for both of you yet does not overwhelm your special day. Little touches that share stylistic design are a great way to tie it all together.

With a visit back to my parents’ in the Welsh valleys slowly approaching, I’ve been inspired by decorations with a homespun feel (not because of the commonly associated hundreds of woolly sheep!). In the country I always stumble across a farmers markets or my mum shows me her latest knitting creation – this time it’s going to be a little matinee jacket for my cousin’s soon-to-be-born little girl. However, not all of us have the time, or on my part the skills, to hand make beautiful fabric decorations to help create the ultimate shabby-chic wedding affair.

Start the fabric theme by sending out wedding invitations adorned with ribbons. This summery Daisy Invitation by Ten and Sixpence is finished with a twist of hot pink satin while this stylish Wedding Invitation Divine by Claire Sowden Design is made of a turquoise and cream chiffon ribbon with a stitched dupion silk flower tie.

As guests arrive to your wedding ceremony, hand out Vintage Fabric Flower Corsages instead of the usual fresh boutonnieres. Decorate the church aisles with Jasmine Fabric Flower Garlands or Vintage Style Fabric Bunting from Patchwork Harmony.

At the reception venue display your table seating arrangements on a Fabric Wedding Table Board, like this one by Peach Blossom. It comes in two different patterns of English blooms making it a great seasonal display. To help guests that little bit extra to find their seat, use Fabric Heart Pegs clipped onto glassware with names attached at each place setting. Drape soft hued fabrics over tables or opt for quirky decorations. Deborah Sparks has a great collection of Hand-knitted Cakes and Tarts, perfect for centrepieces or to accompany the delicious wedding cake – plus they’re in our summer sale too!

Incorporate the homespun essence into your wedding favours too. Opting for a fabric based favour will provide your guests with a memorable item they can keep forever. These Fabric Fortune Cookies are a fun alternative to the edible versions and come in a wide variety of colours and patterns, so can be easily matched to your wedding day theme. Personalised Fabric Hearts, such as the one from Quirky Boots, also make a lovely favour for your loved ones. Milly and Pip’s Personalised Heart with Tooth Fairy Pocket can double up as a thank you gift too. One side is embroided with an initial and the other features a small pocket which can show your wedding date. It’s also a great place to put a chocolate treat, a small piece of jewellery or a special thank you note.
